Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
El Rey del Caribe is a 100% ecological hotel. With a goal is to respect and care for the environment, they use alternative technologies like solar water heaters, separation and recycling of solid waste, organic waste composting and pruning of gardens and recruitment rainwater. They have even a single solar dryer and some rooms are equipped with appropriate technology in composting toilets.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
ECOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGIES
In the rooms and in the common areas, there are clearly marked containers for the collection of organic wastes which are composted on site and inorganic wastes (plastics, aluminium cans, glass and paper) which are recycled.
All organic materials from the garden and from the kitchen are shredded and composted to be returned as hummus to the garden and the flower pots.
El Rey del Caribe Hotel uses two types of composting toilets. In the pool area there is a composting toilet that uses no water. In some of the rooms we have composting toilets that use about 2 cups of water per use. In both examples, the solids are composted to form hummus and the liquids pass through an organic filter to become an odourless compost tea for fertilizing the plants.
The laundry boasts a roof -top solar dryer, an enclosed and ventilated area with a glass roof, which concentrates the sun’s energy, removes the humidity, and reduces drying times
Roof-top solar water heaters capture and store the sun’s heat to provide hot water for the rooms.
Rain water is filtered and stored on the roof.
Grey water is recycled in two ways.
a.-Grey water from the laundry is redirected to irrigate the garden.
b.-Water from the pool is reused for the traditional flush toilets, in some rooms, eliminating the waste of potable water for them.
Involve their guests in the following manner:
You have arrived to El Rey del Caribe Hotel, a hotel that is environmental responsible with an ecological concept made reality.
Can you help with this effort? Please follow the following steps
- Turn off lights and the air conditioner when leaving the room, taking off the key from it…saving energy and equipment.
- Hang up your damp, but clean, towels on your room’s towel racks, so they will dry and can be reused.
- Use the clearly marked containers to separate the organics and recyclable materials, because the maid has to do it any way
- Save water and electric energy.
