Welcome to Cancun!
Not too long ago Cancun was just an obscure little fishing village hidden behind tropical jungles. But in the thirty odd years since the Mexican government made it into a resort, Cancun (it means "golden snake" in Mayan) has become one of the top beach destinations in the world, attracting more than three million tourists every year. And it's not really surprising as Cancun is blessed with broad landscapes of spectacular white sandy beaches, clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean and sunny weather almost the year-round. Add to this nature's bounty an array of glitzy Cancun hotels providing ultramodern comforts, and an exciting nightlife, and you have an ideal holiday spot.
Cancun is one of the world's premier beach destinations, and the ideal place for those looking to both relax and party!
The island is shaped like a "7" and encloses the Nichupte Lagoon towards the south which is an ideal place for all sorts of water sports. The western side, on the short end of the "7", is also great for water sports as the surf is gentler here being sheltered by Isla Mujeres which lies just off shore. Towards the north of the island is the Caribbean Sea which can be rough at times.
While the Cancun Hotel Zone is opulent and American in spirit, the mainland part of Cancun, known as Ciudad Cancun or El Centro has a more Mexican feel to it and is where most of the local population live. This is where you will find inexpensive accommodation in Cancun, some good Cancun restaurants, bars and shops and regular bus services to the beaches.
Cancun gets more than 200 days of sunny weather a year and for most visitors there is nothing better than sunbathing or a swim during the daytime. but there is much more to see and do in and around Cancun. There are a number of water sports that you can indulge in - surfing, jet-skiing, snorkelling, parasailing, scuba diving, fishing, canoeing and sailing to name the most popular ones. Horse riding, golfing, tennis, squash and bungee jumping are other sporting activities on offer at Cancun.
If you are not into sports and have had your fill of the sun and the surf, there is always shopping and Cancun offers excellent shopping opportunities. Foodies too will have a great time in Cancun with its plethora of fine Cancun restaurants offering the choicest dishes. Cancun is particularly noted for its fresh sea food and traditional Mayan cuisine. Good Continental, Chinese and Mediterranean fare is served at many restaurants and fast-food joints are present everywhere.
Night time in Cancun is as much fun as daytime, if not more. Apart from the glitzy discos and nightclubs with their electrifying ambience and jiving crowd there are the many bars and cantinas that stay open till dawn. Taking in the traditional dances performed by the Ballet Folklorico is another way to while away the cool nights of Cancun.
